RMO JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Resident Medical Officer
RESPONSIBLE TO: i) Administratively to the Hospital Matron ii) Clinically and professionally to the Consultant in charge of the case and also through the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for carrying out clinical procedures appropriate to the care of the patient in liaison with the consultant in charge of the case. n.b. The RMO will not have the benefit of admitting rights to the hospital.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To provide a continuous resident medical service to the hospital during a specific span of duty.
2. To see any in-patient or out-patient at the request of the nursing staff or their consultant.
3. To clinically assess all patients admitted to the ward on the day of admission.
4. To attend and receive full ward reports from nurses in charge twice daily.
5. To undertake and document a daily inpatient ward round in a timely manner noting date, time and status.
6. To record all patient treatments in the patient notes maintaining contact with the consultant in charge of the case and the nursing staff over the treatment given to the patient.
7. In accordance with hospital protocols, and as requested by the consultants, to undertake certain medical procedures and specialist duties e.g. Venepuncture and Phlebotomy. Setting up and continuing Intravenous Infusions. Maintaining patient controlled analgesia and epidural analgesia infusions. Siting Indwelling Cannulae. Inserting Urinary Catheters. ECG’s. IV Injections. Attendance during Stress Tests in Out Patients Department (OPD) Assist with Fluorescein Angiography
8. To request, read, analyse and document all investigative results and take appropriate action and discuss necessary actions with the nurse in charge and consultants.
9. To ensure correct procedures are carried out in respect of:- Admissions - scheduled or emergency. Planned discharge. Patients discharging themselves against medical advice. Death in care and coroners requirements (completion of documentation). Patients attending outpatient departments. Medical emergency such as cardiac arrest or pulmonary embolis.
10. To ensure that the Consultant in charge of an acutely ill patient is immediately informed of any change in the patients condition, if any complications develop and any emergency procedures are undertaken.
11. To be fully conversant with, and take responsibility for, prescribing, administration and dispensing of medicines used within the hospital, and be aware of any unlicensed medicines being used at the hospital.
12. To function as a key member of the cardiac arrest team and undertake emergency resuscitation procedures according to Hospital policy.
13. To examine and advise on the treatment of patients; visitors and staff who fall ill or suffer injury whilst on the Hospital site. To initiate treatment and complete accident/adverse incident forms as appropriate.
14. To assist Consultants in Theatres during operations as required.
15. To be aware of, and to comply with, Health and Safety at Work, Fire and COSHH regulations as laid down in the Hospital Policy and Procedure manuals.
16. To co-operate with all other departments in the interest of patient care.
17. To ensure that compassion is used when dealing with patients, relatives and visitors.
18. To offer support to patients and nursing staff during stressful situations.
19. To promote the hospital by being aware of the importance of customer care and public relations.
20. The RMO will wear a white coat and name badge at all times when working in the clinical areas.
21. The RMO will be expected to familiarise themselves with the following:- Hospital Protocols, Policy and Procedure Manuals The crash trolley and equipment for emergency resuscitation. Fire exits, fire fighting equipment and the procedure for evacuating the premises in the case of an emergency. n.b. RMO cover will be co-ordinated by the Matron and any alterations to the normal arrangements must be done with their prior knowledge
22. To be responsible for own medical/clinical updates
23. To attend lectures/study days as requested by the hospital Matron/Agency.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE To ensure the safety and provision of the highest standard of medical care is delivered to patients and relatives in a caring and professional environment.
This job description may vary from time to time according to the requirements of the Matron. Please note that hours may vary between hospitals and in most cases you may be required to work / be on call 24 hours per day 7 days per week!
